Job Description
I’m working with a long standing and steadily growing construction business who are looking for a commercially sharp Financial Controller to step into a genuinely influential role. This is a well respected organisation with deep roots in the industry, strong national customers, and a reputation for being easy to deal with and getting things done properly.
This role goes well beyond traditional reporting. It will suit an experienced Financial Controller who enjoys being hands on, but also wants to think strategically about growth, margin, cash and governance. You will lead the finance function end to end, report directly into the GM, and act as a trusted advisor to both leadership and the family owners.
The business is privately owned and operates in a close knit, family environment. Integrity is everything here. You will be deeply trusted, involved in sensitive financial matters, and relied on to bring clarity, compliance and sound judgement. The focus is on accuracy, purpose and commercial outcomes.
What you will be doing day to day
- Owning budgets, forecasts and a clear financial strategy that supports growth to 30 million
- Driving profitable revenue growth by improving margin, pricing discipline and cost control
- Managing cash tightly through a rolling 13 week cash flow forecast and working capital focus
- Producing accurate monthly accounts, dashboards and board level reporting you stand behind
- Leading tax, compliance, audit and governance with a strong eye for risk and detail
- Partnering with leadership on capital allocation, dividends and long term ownership planning
- Supporting potential acquisitions and identifying new revenue opportunities
- Leading a small finance team covering AP, finance support and payroll, with plans to offshore repeatable work over time
- Ensuring payroll, payables and receivables run smoothly, accurately and on time
- Acting as an objective escalation point for sensitive people or risk related matters
- Separating business and personal financials clearly when advising the family owners
You will be highly visible, close to the action, and involved in decisions that genuinely shape the future of the business.
What we are looking for
- Senior Financial Controller or CFO level experience in an SME or multi entity environment
- Strong capability across cash flow, tax, compliance and financial governance
- Comfort working closely with owners, boards and banks
- A commercial mindset with a clear focus on profitable growth and efficiency
- Confidence challenging constructively and holding people accountable
- High integrity and strong judgement, especially in complex or sensitive situations
- Calm, practical and straight talking approach
- Comfortable operating in a fast paced, hands on construction environment
- Industry experience is not essential, attitude and capability matter more
The finance team currently includes accounts payable and finance support, with the GM still hands on and keen to step back over time. The business operates across multiple sites, but this role must be based in Porirua.
