Job Description
If you’re a senior Management Accountant with solid government experience and a passion for making management accounting more engaging, this could be a fantastic opportunity for you. Based in the heart of the Wellington, this role sits within a small, close-knit team where collaboration and open communication are genuinely valued. You’ll be in the office three days a week with flexibility around working from home, making it a great balance between connection and autonomy.
We’re after someone confident and experienced, who can have those challenging conversations, take ownership of their work and help lift the project function in the team. There’s real potential here to grow into a leadership position, so if you’re looking for a place to develop and make a tangible impact, this is worth a look.
What you’ll be doing:
You’ll own the full management accounting cycle, from preparing budgets and forecasts to delivering insightful variance analysis and monthly reporting. Month-end processing will be minimal, so your focus will be on high-quality reporting and financial analysis that supports business decision-making. You’ll also have a hand in project accounting, helping evaluate new projects, developing business cases, and providing ongoing financial advice and support. Strong Excel skills will be your best friend here as you build robust models and reports that drive clarity and insight.
Being part of a smaller team means you’ll manage relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders and work alongside people who are genuinely open to fresh ideas and continuous improvement. It’s a safe space to be transparent, share frustrations, and contribute to meaningful change.
What you’ll need to succeed:
- A relevant tertiary qualification and Chartered Accountant status or equivalent
- Experience working in a government or public sector environment
- Strong all-round management accounting skills including budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis and reporting
- Project accounting experience managing capital and operational budgets
- Advanced Excel skills, comfortable with pivot tables, lookups and complex formulas
- A collaborative mindset with great communication skills — able to work well with non-accountants and senior managers
- An ability to handle ambiguity and thrive in a changing environment
What you’ll get in return:
- A supportive and transparent team culture that values high collaboration
- The opportunity to make management accounting more interesting and innovative
- A role with real development potential into a leadership position
- Flexible working arrangements with two days work from home per week
